Welcome to Conflict Catcher 8. This new version contains many new and improved features.
How to Update your previous version of Conflict Catcher 8 to version 8.0.8:
1) Run the application "Conflict Catcher 8.0.8 Update".
2) If Conflict Catcher 8 is not installed, then you will be prompted to locate your original Conflict Catcher control panel. You can insert your original Conflict Catcher 8 CD and locate the control panel in the Conflict Catcher™ folder.
3) Click OK when you get to the splash screen.
4) Select the volume you want to install onto and click on "Install".
5) When the installation is completed click on "Restart".
Installation options:
If you launch "Conflict Catcher 8.0.8 Update" while holding down the "Option" key, the installation will proceed normally and a Conflict Catcher folder will be left on your hard drive. This folder contains a full Conflict Catcher 8.0.8 installer, which you can use for subsequent installations.
New Features in Conflict Catcher 8
• Clean-Install System Merge
Merges the contents of your previous system folder into a newly installed system folder, saving you hours of work.
• Improved Conflict Test
You can now save multiple tests, go backwards in a test, answer test questions from the Finder and view more information about the progress of the test.
• Works with Mac OS 8.6 and Mac OS 9
Conflict Catcher works with Mac OS 8.6 and Mac OS 9, and takes advantage of its latest capabilities, including themes and new navigation services.
• More Descriptions
We have included descriptions for over 5000 different files that may be in your System Folder. Conflict Catcher tells you what each one does, so that you can turn off the ones you don't need.
• Get file descriptions while starting up
Click on an icon as it appears while the computer starts up and Conflict Catcher will tell you what it does and who makes it.
• Contextual Menu Support
Contextual menus are available in Conflict Catcher's main window. To open a contextual menu, hold down the control key, point to an item then click and hold. This feature only works with Mac OS 8.0 and later.
• Restricted User Level
Administrators can restrict users ability to change the startup environment. Combined with a security program that restricts access to the system folder, this effectively protects public computers.
• Startup Menu
Startup menu displays system folders on their respective disks and allows you to choose which system you want to startup from.
• List by Company Name
You can list your files by the name of the manufacturer.
• Rebuild Desktop
You can rebuild your desktop databases (while saving your comments) from within Conflict Catcher.
• Scan any folder for damage
Conflict Catcher can now scan any folder for damage, including preferences.
• Multiple columns
Conflict Catcher displays many columns, each of which can show unique information about your files. This feature is customizable according to your needs.
• Fully PowerPC Native
Conflict Catcher is now a fat application which includes native code for both 68000 and PowerPC processors.
• OS X Classic Default Set
Added the ability within Create/Edit Sets to define a Mac OS X (Classic mode) default set

Clean-Install System Merge Notes
• Install Conflict Catcher on both systems
To perform a Clean-Install System Merge you must have Conflict Catcher installed on both the Previous System Folder and on the New System folder. Run the Conflict Catcher installer to install Conflict Catcher in your Clean System Folder. See the manual for more information.
• Install all "upgrades" to new system
Your Clean-Install should include all the "upgrades" to the base system software that the previous System contains. For instance, if your previous system contained updates to OpenTransport, make sure your new System Folder has also been updated to the latest version of OpenTransport. This is good for overall stability as well as establishing that no older software mixes with newer software.
• Language Kits
Since there are resources in the System File that cannot be merged, you must install the latest Language Kit into the new System Folder BEFORE performing the merge (if you used a Language Kit in your previous System).
• Run Clean-Install System Merge at startup time
It is highly recommended that you run the Clean-Install System Merge at startup time. To do so, restart the computer and hold down the spacebar until Conflict Catcher opens. Then access Clean-Install System Merge from the Special menu.
• You must merge to the same or newer operating system
Conflict Catcher cannot merge newer system software into older system software since the two versions may be incompatible.
• Clean-Install System Merge requires a US operating system
In order for Conflict Catcher to support Clean-Install System Merge on a non-US operating systems we need help from someone fluent in the language who has access to every Macintosh operating system since System 7.0. If you are willing and able to assist us please send an email to conflictcatcher@casadyg.com.
Notes about known problems
• Importing Extensions Manager Sets from System 7.5.5 and earlier
If you are running System 7.5.5 or earlier you will need to export your Extensions Manager sets before they can be imported into Conflict Catcher.
• Rebuilding the desktop and Aladdin StuffIt Deluxe
Rebuilding the desktop database while the Mail Extension feature in StuffIt Deluxe v5.0 (or earlier) is on, will cause an empty desktop database to be created. This will result in generic icons being drawn in the finder.
To get around the problem:
1. Turn off MagicMenu, located in the True Finder Integration control panel, or
2. Remove the Mail Extension from the folder ":System Folder: Extensions: Aladdin: Magic Menu Extensions:"
StuffIt Deluxe 5.1.2 or later will resolve the problem.
• Startup menu and Multiple partitions
The Startup menu will be unable to select a different disk on a machine with the New World ROM. These machines include all iMacs, 1999 Lombard Powerbooks (bronze keyboard) and later, B/W G3s, iBooks, and G4s. Choosing a different System Folder on the same disk will function correctly. We hope to correct this in a future update to Conflict Catcher.
• Startup menu and partitioned APS Hard Drives
When using the startup menu to select a system folder on a partitioned APS hard drive, the first partition will always be selected by default. This happens with both the startup menu and Apple's Startup Disk control panel.
Miscellaneous
• Register Over the Internet
Register Conflict Catcher over the internet by selecting "Register Online…" from the Apple menu while Conflict Catcher is open.
• Update Conflict Catcher Over the Internet
Update Conflict Catcher over the internet by selecting "Update Conflict Catcher" from the Web menu while Conflict Catcher is open. This will actually check whether you are running the latest version and point you to the update file if necessary.
• Missing file descriptions
Is one of your files missing a description? Copy the file's information to the clipboard (Command-C in Conflict Catcher), and then paste the information into your email program. If you know who makes the file, or what it does, please include that information. Send it to "ccdescriptions@casadyg.com".
